The crew of the Republic of Singapore Air Force’s (RSAF) CH-47 helicopter has conducted deck landing qualifications on HMAS Adelaide.

The Royal Australian Navy’s (RAN) ship served as a platform for the qualifications off the coast of Townsville, Queensland.

Australian Defence Minister Linda Reynolds said: “Last week I conducted my second official visit to Singapore, and met with my counterpart Minister for Defence, Dr Ng Eng Hen.

“During the visit, we jointly marked 30 years of the Singapore Armed Forces training in Australia.

“The 30th Anniversary of Singapore training in Australia is a significant milestone in our bilateral defence relationship, and this activity is a clear demonstration of the closeness of our friendship and our growing interoperability.”

The crew on the helicopter flew from HMAS Adelaide at sea to carry out the deck landing qualifications, which includes the communication with the flight control room of the ship.

They were also guided by Australian sailors who were on deck.

The deck landing qualifications was carried out for a period of two days and Adelaide carried out different amphibious and aviation training exercises.

HMAS Adelaide commanding officer captain Jonathan Ley added: “Singapore’s CH-47 aircraft worked alongside army’s 5th Aviation Regiment during the 2020 bushfire emergency in Victoria, so to have that combined capability at sea is an important element as we again move into the high-risk emergency season.”

CH-47 Chinook is around 30m-long and is designed to provide tactical transport capabilities.
