Patriot air and missile defence system

Raytheon has secured a $2bn contract to supply the combat-proven Patriot air and missile defence system to an undisclosed international customer.

The contract covers fully digitised new-production Patriot fire units featuring the latest technology for improved threat detection, identification and engagement.

Patriot is claimed to be one of the world’s most modern and capable air and missile defence systems, offering protection against a full range of advanced threats. This includes aircraft, tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles.

Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems president Daniel J Crowley said: "In the past five months Qatar, Korea and now this international partner have all chosen Raytheon’s Global Patriot solution because they have confidence in the world’s most advanced air and missile defence system.

"Including this most recent contract, Raytheon has booked more than $5 billion in international Patriot orders since late December 2014."

The direct commercial sale contract will also require Raytheon to provide a full training package and support equipment.

Earlier in December 2014, Raytheon secured a contract for the supply of new-production Patriot air and missile defence system fire units to Qatar.

This foreign military sales contract was valued at $2.4bn.

During the same period, the company received a $75.6m contract from the US Air Force (USAF) to create an air and missile defence operation centre for Qatar.

Patriot is currently used by 13 armed forces across the globe.
