The Indian Ministry of Defence has signed contracts with Russia, France and Ukraine to upgrade the flying fleet of the Indian Air Force (IAF), defence minister AK Antony confirmed.

Under the three separate contracts, MiG Russia will upgrade MiG-29 aircraft, Spets Techno Export will work on the An-32 aircraft, while Thales and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) will overhaul the Mirage 2000 aircraft.

Antony added that the contracts were at the execution stage and include upgrades of existing aircraft systems and platforms as well as integration of modern equipment.

The contracts awarded under the IAF’s Long Term Plan are aimed at building capability to overcome emerging security challenges.

The IAF currently operates a fleet of 51 Mirage 2000 aircraft, 68 MiG-29s and a total of 110 An-32 medium transport aircraft.
