M346 trainer

Alenia Aermacchi has received a contract from the Polish Ministry of Defence to supply M-346 Master advanced/lead-in fighter trainer aircraft to the national air force.

Under the €280m contract, the Finmeccanica subsidiary will deliver eight M-346 aircraft, along with logistic support, a training programme for pilots and engineers, and a ground-based training system with dedicated classrooms and educational materials.

Signed during a ceremony at the Deblin Air Force Base in eastern Poland, the contract follows Poland’s formal selection of the M-346 for its aircraft advanced jet trainer (AJT) programme in December 2013, which also includes an option on additional four planes.

Polish Defence Secretary Czeslaw Mroczek said, "The system that we are buying is not just aircraft – it’s a simulator and a logistics package and is an extremely important component of the training that we have been building for many years."

The aircraft won the Polish contract against international competitors including BAE Systems Hawk AJT, and the Korea Aerospace Industries/Lockheed Martin T-50 Golden Eagle aircraft.

"The M-346 Master is a military transonic trainer aircraft designed to offer combat pilot training for frontline fighters."

Based on the Russian Yak-130 combat trainer, the M-346 Master is a military transonic trainer aircraft designed to offer combat pilot training for frontline fighters with high angle-of-attack capability.

Powered by two Honeywell F124 engines, the lead-in fifth-generation fighter features a fly-by-wire control system to enable the aircraft to remain fully controllable at angles of attack of more than 35°, and an integrated digital avionics suite that enables the simulation of sensors and threats during flight.

The aircraft’s avionics are based on those used in current fighters, including the F-16, F-18 and other new-generation aircraft, such as Typhoon, Gripen, Rafale, F-22 and the F-35 joint strike fighter (JSF).

Aircraft deliveries to the 41st Air Training Base are expected to begin in 2016, with anticipated completion in 2017, IHS Jane reports.
