BAE Systems has received a contract to provide identification-friend-or-foe (IFF) systems for US Air National Guard F-16 Fighting Falcons.

Under the four-year $17.2m contract, BAE will provide 90 AN/APX-113(V) combined interrogator-transponders, versatile IFF systems developed for the F-16 aircraft.

The system generates and responds to interrogations to positively establish the identity of friendly forces and reduces the risk of friendly fire.

The system’s combined interrogator / transponder includes the latest IFF technology to enable war fighters to effectively distinguish friendly and enemy aircraft.

The world’s largest operator of F-16 aircraft, the Air National Guard will use the IFF systems for US air defence.

It will also use the IFF system to assist the US Air Force in their missions, including tactical airlift support, combat communications, aerial refuelling, and evacuation of the wounded.
