The US Air Force has awarded a $1.7bn contract to United Technologies for the installation of F117-PW-100 engines, spare engines and the supply of associated data for the air force’s C-17 aircraft.

The F117-PW-100 engine will power the C-17 aircraft, which carries a payload of 160,600 pounds and take off from a 7,600-foot airfield.

The C-17, which can fly 2,400 nautical miles without refuelling, has in-flight refuelling capability and can land on small and tough airfields of 3,000 feet or less.

The Pratt & Whitney F117-PW-100 engine is the military version of the company’s PW2000 commercial engine.

Under the contract, a total of 208 engines will be acquired, for which no money has been obligated.

The contracting activity for the award is 577 AESG/PK, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio.
