The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) and Boeing have commissioned a C-17 Globemaster III aircrew training system (ATS) at the RAAF Base Amberley.

The C-17 ATS consists of a weapons systems trainer (WST), a realistic, full-motion simulator used for pilot training, a loadmaster station, a learning centre and other support systems.

The loadmaster station is used by aircrew to practice preflight operations, operation of aircraft systems and emergency procedures.

The system, part of a US foreign military sale, was delivered for assembly and testing to the air force in late April 2009.

The continuation training for the current RAAF C-17 pilots and loadmasters will begin in January 2010.

Boeing will provide training and logistics support for the training devices, while Thales will supply future maintenance services.
