Bulgaria has deferred new Nato-compatible multirole jet fighter acquisition plans indefinitely, Prime Minister Boyko Borissov has said.

“We will buy new fighters, only when it becomes extremely indispensable because of our membership in Nato,” he said.

Bulgaria had planned to announce a tender for supply of “probably no more than eight” Nato-compatible multirole fighters by the beginning of 2012 to replace its MiG-29 fighters.

The Bulgarian Air Force recently signed a modernisation and services agreement for its MiG-29 jets.

Xinhua also quoted the prime minister as saying the country’s present priorities were building road infrastructure, and increasing pensions and citizens incomes.

“Sooner or later we will have new aircraft,” Borissov added.
