The Israeli Air Force (IAF) is to deploy its third Iron Dome mobile air defence system in September, the Israeli Government has said.

The decision follows the successful IAF interception of 90% of BM-21 Grad 122mm and Kassam rockets launched into Israel.

The IAF also plans to operate nine air defence systems by the end of 2013, which will intercept short-range rockets and artillery shells.

The Rafael-built Iron Dome system features tracking radar, a battle management and weapons control unit and a missile firing unit armed with interceptors to trace threats up to a range of 70km.

Israel deployed its first Iron Dome near Ashqelon in the South District of Israel on the Mediterranean coast in early April, according to Flightglobal.
