The US Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (AFB) has become the new USAF reserve command unit to the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III airlifter following transition.

The AFB, which previously housed the C-5A Galaxy, received its first C-17 in 1999 and plans to equip the unit with a total of nine C-17s by the end of fiscal year 2012.

The C-17 is a tactical and strategic airlifter used to land combat-ready troops in remote locations or airdrop them directly where needed and is used by the US and allied forces for missions in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Boeing will continue to support the aircraft through the C-17 Globemaster III sustainment partnership (GSP) to ensure mission readiness.

The USAF has taken delivery of 211 C-17s to date.
