Nato defence ministers have decided to extend Operation Unified Protector in Libya for another 90 days, Nato Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen has said.

“All of the ministers agreed that we would keep up the pressure for as long as it takes to bring this crisis to an early conclusion,” he added.

The extension will authorise Nato to continue operations through the end of September, and support the effort in Libya by providing necessary capabilities.

Nato had taken control of aerial operations in Libya to enforce the no-fly zone imposed by the UN to protect civilians from attacks by troops loyal to Colonel Gaddafi.
