The US Air Force (USAF) Thunderbirds team will demonstrate camelina-based hydrotreated renewable jet fuel at the Joint Services Open House, US, on 20-21 May 2011.

The demonstration is part of the nation’s overall strategy to reduce dependence on foreign energy and to establish greater energy security through alternative energy sources.

USAF installations, environment and logistics assistant secretary Terry Yonkers said the use of alternative fuel could result in the air force saving hundreds of millions of dollars a year.

The air force has tested and certified biofuel as a 50% blend with regular jet fuel in the A-10 Thunderbolt II, the F-15 Eagle, the C-17 Globemaster III and the F-22 Raptor.

The service will continue to test and evaluate biomass fuels derived from camelina, plant seed oil, beef tallow, or animal fat, and various waste oils and greases.
