BAE Systems has completed the upgrade of navigation and weapons system for the South African Air Force (SAAF) fleet of Hawk jet trainers.

The software and hardware upgrade, known as Operational Capability 4, enables the Hawk Mk120 to share simulated radar data across multiple platforms.

The upgrade includes introduction of software to simulate the use of infra-red and radar guided missiles and the replacement of existing analogue video recording with a digital recording capability.

The capability upgrade on the Hawk Mk120 fleet is scheduled to be completed before the end of this year.

BAE has delivered 24 Hawk Mk120 Lead in Fighter Trainers to South Africa, where they are used for training Gripen pilots and weapons officers.
