The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) C-17 Simulator has taken part in the first virtual training event with the US and other coalition partners during the Virtual Pitch Black and Coalition Virtual Flag exercises.
The participation came after multiple quick-turn acquisition actions were completed by a team from the Agile Combat Support Directorate’s Simulators Division.

Acquisition actions included the award of a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract to Frontier Technology and Northrop Grumman Systems.
Under one of the SBIR contracts, the Distributed Mission Operations (DMO) kit was installed, which was used for the virtual environment.
The training system is a complete mock-up of a C-17 cockpit, including the full motion, a high-resolution day / night visual system, airdrop ability and air refuel.
It is claimed to be important for the success of the C-17 fleet and provides training to Australian C-17 pilots.

By GlobalDataRAAF pilots fulfilled major objectives such as integrated combat, international crew training, and large force employment, during the exercise.
The planning of the exercises was coordinated with nine different US and Australian Air Force organisations.
Simulators Division RAAF C-17 Training System programme manager Melissa Sayre said: “Reaching this milestone is not only important to the RAAF but also the US Air Force.
“Regardless of Covid-19 limitations, multiple organisations have pulled together to enhance coalition training and provide more opportunities to be involved in integrated planning and execution.
“Through the airforce synthetic environment, virtual exercises will be able to represent multi-domain contested, degraded, and operationally limited environments. Through meeting this key milestone, pilots will greatly benefit from joint virtual training.”
