The US Air Force’s global positioning system (GPS) III programme has entered the critical design review (CDR) stage, it has been announced at this year’s Paris Air Show.

Throughout the next year, the CDR will be conducted by contractors Lockheed Martin and General Dynamics, which will review key GPS III spacecraft subsystems, assemblies and elements aboard the satellite.

The GPS III will provide the air force with better position, navigation and timing services and offer them advanced anti-jam capabilities yielding superior system security, accuracy and reliability.

The warfighters will be aided with critical situational awareness and precision weapon guidance through the GPS constellation.

The US Air Force Space Command’s 2nd Space Operations Squadron, based at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, manages and operates the GPS constellation for both civil and military users.
