Boeing has unveiled the first of 24 Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) F/A-18F Block II Super Hornet fighters.

The new multi-role fighter will deliver advanced air combat capabilities to the RAAF across the range of air-to-air, strategic land attacks and maritime strikes supported by its networked weapons system.

The Block II F/A-18E/Fs will perform tactical missions including air superiority, day/night strike, fighter escort, close air support, suppression of enemy air defences, reconnaissance, forward air control and tanker missions.

The RAAF ordered the Super Hornets in December 2007, making it the first air force outside the US to own the fighter.

The air force will receive the first fighter later in July and the remaining 23 between 2010 and 2011.
