The Israeli Air Force is seeking to acquire V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft for use in search-and-rescue and special operations, the Jerusalem Post has reported.

The air force will send a team to the US this month to evaluate the aircraft, which will after examination submit a recommendation to the air force commander general Ido Nehushtan.

The multimission aircraft, built by Bell Helicopter and Boeing Rotorcraft Systems, was earlier sought for replacing its aging fleet of Sikorsky CH-53 Sea Stallion transport helicopters.

The V-22 Osprey features vertical take-off and landing capability and can carry 24 fully equipped combat troops and more than 19,800lb of internal or external cargo.

The aircraft has a range of 2,500 miles with a single in-flight refuelling.
