The Danish Government has rejected Nato’s request to deploy F-16 fighters to Afghanistan due to its tight defence budget.

Foreign Minister Lene Espersen told AFP that Denmark is one of the countries that has contributed the most to Afghanistan.

The government has a strong desire to scale down Denmark’s military engagement in Afghanistan and is under no obligation to do more, according to Espersen.

The F-16 requested by Nato is a multirole fighter aircraft that is highly manoeuvrable.

Prime Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen said Denmark would withdraw all its combat troops from Afghanistan by 2015.
