Serco has been contracted to continue to support the UK Royal Air Force’s (RAF) solid-state phased array radar (SSPAR) system.

Awarded by the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD), the three-year contract extension will see Serco provide maintenance, repair and operational services for the radar at the RAF Fylingdales in North Yorkshire, UK.

The North Yorkshire site is responsible for providing ballistic missile early warning service to the UK and US governments to deter surprise missile attacks.

RAF Fylingdales is also a part of the UK Space Command’s operational arm.

In addition, the contract includes providing facilities and hardware systems maintenance services, project management services, analytical and training activities support and services for other life support systems.

Serco UK defence business interim managing director Keith Hillas said: “We’ve been here a long time and the work we are entrusted to do is an important part of the UK’s national security.

“We’re proud and privileged to offer our continuing service to the MOD and the US Department of Defense in the support of this critical asset.

“We employ a highly skilled and specialised engineering and technical team who are a key part of Serco’s high technology work in the air and space domain.”

The initial operation and maintenance support contract was awarded in April 2014. It was valid for a period of six years.

The latest extension has been awarded under the second of two three-year contract options, exercised by the UK MoD.

With all the options exercised, the contract will now run from 2023 to 2026.

The SSPAR system first became operational in October 1992 and replaced the old rotating radars, which were fitted inside large, protective radomes.
