Gripen

The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has awarded a SEK154m ($17.8m) contract to Saab to provide support and maintenance for Gripen aircraft.

Saab signed a contract in 2012 with FMV for performance-based support and maintenance of the Gripen fighter and the new contract is an exercise of an option held under that contract.

The company will offer support and maintenance operations with a focus on technical support, publications and component maintenance to support the continued operation of Gripen.

Saab Business Area Support and Services head Jonas Hjelm said: "This order for performance-based support and maintenance guarantees efficient operations and availability for the Gripen fighter over the coming years."

Work under the contract will be carried out at its Swedish facilities in Linköping, Arboga, Järfälla, Gothenburg, Växjö and Östersund.

The 2012 contract includes options for additional orders up to a maximum value of SEK1.37bn ($158m) to the period ending in December next year.

In July, FMV contracted Saab to deliver spare parts for Gripen E multirole combat aircraft.

"This order for performance-based support and maintenance guarantees efficient operations and availability for the Gripen fighter over the coming years."

The development, valued at SEK250m ($30.02m), is part of a framework agreement signed between Saab and FMV in February 2013 for development work on the JAS 39 Gripen E.

Covered in the SEK47.2bn ($7.4bn) agreement is production and delivery of 60 Gripen E aircraft for the Swedish Air Force.

The Gripen E is a next-generation version of the JAS 39 Gripen aircraft, and features more powerful engines, a new active electronically scanned array radar, advanced avionics, and upgraded presentation systems in the cockpit to successfully conduct longer missions.

Equipped with an increased number of weapon pylons, the fighter has maximum payload and more internal fuel for improved range and endurance.
