Saab 2000 AWACS

Saab has been awarded a contract for provision of support services for the Saab 2000 Airborne Early Warning & Control (AEW&C) system of an undisclosed international country.

Under the SEK1.1bn ($169.7m) contract, the company will supply a comprehensive set of spares and support services for the AEW&C system.

Saab business area security and defence solutions head Gunilla Fransson said the contract represents further confirmation of its capability to offer advanced service and support solutions to customers.

"Our surveillance system provides the customer with improved solutions for defence and civil security," Fransson added.

Powered by two Rolls-Royce AE 2100A turboprop engines, the Saab 2000 AEW&C is a derivative of the Saab 2000 regional transport turboprop aircraft, equipped with the spine-mounted Erieye PS-890 side-looking reconnaissance radar and associated ground equipment.

"The company will supply a comprehensive set of spares and support services for the AEW&C system."

Enabling control over both land and sea, even under heavy jamming conditions, the multirole system is widely used for national security missions, border control, airborne command and control, disaster management coordination and emergency air traffic control missions.

Based on the active electronically scanned array (AESA) technology, the Erieye radar system enables detection of a wide range of small air and maritime surface targets, including hovering helicopters and rigid inflatable boats (RIB) in dense hostile electronic warfare environments.

Primarily used by the Pakistan Air Force to monitor Indian airspace, different configurations of Saab 2000 AEW&C are also operational with six countries worldwide, including Sweden, Greece, Mexico, Brazil, Thailand and UAE. Deliveries under the contract are scheduled to be completed by 2017.
