ISR Net Phase 2 implementation

Rockwell Collins has received a contract modification from the US Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) to complete the production and qualification of the Tactical Targeting Network Technology (TTNT) waveform.

Valued at $18m, the latest award further extends the contract value and scope for completion of the TTNT waveform development initiative, and also facilitates its implementation across a wide range of military aircraft.

Rockwell Collins Communication and Navigation Products vice president and general manager Bob Haag said the waveform will offer a higher throughput, low latency networking capability, enabling soldiers to address new and emerging mission requirements.

”TTNT will provide the Department of Defense with a unique networking capability that the warfighter does not have today,” Haag added.

TTNT is an airborne network wireless technology developed as part of the AFRL and US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR)-Net Quick Reaction Capability (QRC) to offer ISR products and network application support to dismounted soldiers.

The waveform provides a wide range of tactical targeting network capabilities, including high throughput, long-range communication links, ad hoc network security authentication, real-time on-demand capacity allocation, and low latency message delivery for airborne platforms.

Additional offerings include complete coexistence with Link 16, as well as minimal purchase cost, lifecycle cost and installation, network planning, monitoring and management tools, enabling participants to enter and exit the network without pre-planning.

The waveform will be used by the Joint Tactical Networking Center’s Information Repository and has already been demonstrated onboard the F-16, F-22, F-5, F/A-18, B-2, B-52, airborne warning and control system (AWACS) and battlefield airborne communications node (BACN), as well as the E-2C Hawkeye aircraft.

Other components of the ISR-Net QRC system include the tactical QUINT Networking Technology (QNT), which aims to provide warfighters with on-demand access to tactical data in the battlefield.
