Patriot simulator

The Israel Defense Forces’ (IDF) Air Defense Command has completed installation of an advanced Patriot long range air defence system simulator at the Air Defense Academy in southern Israel.

Equipped with a total of ten command posts, the new next-generation simulator is capable of providing soldiers with flexibility and frequency needed for training with the Patriot system, while eliminating the requirement for travelling to the US for training programmes.

Replicating command posts in the Patriot command and control centre, the simulator also features a special instruction post to enable operators to control different simulated scenarios.

Air Defense Staff Doctrine and Training Branch head lieutenant colonel Gershon Zlotnik said the training centre is also expected to facilitate networking with the Israeli Air Force’s (IAF) other training systems, including flight simulators in the future.

"Manufactured by Raytheon, the MIM-104 Patriot is an advanced, high-velocity, hit-to-kill air defence missile."

Resulting connectivity is likely to enable a combat pilot to conduct joint training with a Patriot operator, Zlotnik added. The operators will be trained to identify and quickly intercept enemy targets, such as aircraft and missiles intruding Israeli airspace, during training sorties.

An advanced Arrow missile defence system training centre is also scheduled to be fielded by the Air Defense Command at the same installation in the near future.
