A new report, titled 'Syria: Russia's shameful failure to acknowledge civilian killings' focuses on Russia's six air strikes in Homs, Idlib and Aleppo provinces between September and November which killed at least 200 civilians.

Amnesty Middle East and North Africa programme director Philip Luther said: "Some Russian airstrikes appear to have directly attacked civilians or civilian objects by striking residential areas with no evident military target and even medical facilities, resulting in deaths and injuries to civilians,"

"Such attacks may amount to war crimes.

"It is crucial that suspected violations are independently and impartially investigated."

The organisation claims that Russian airstrikes were not targeted at any terrorist deployments or fighters but rather the densely populated civilian areas in the country.

"It is crucial that suspected violations are independently and impartially investigated."

However, the Russian authorities have denied responsibility in the killing of civilians and have retorted saying that they have struck only 'terrorist' targets including ISIS.

Luther added: "Russia must end indiscriminate and other unlawful attacks.

"They must halt all use of cluster munitions and stop dropping unguided bombs on civilian areas."

Currently, apart from Russia, the US-led coalition is also performing its own air strikes against ISIS targets in Syria.
