The Hercules will be assigned to 336 Squadron and can land and take off from unpaved runways.

It will play a major role in the transport of personnel and equipment to and from Afghanistan.

The Netherlands has deployed two C-130 aircraft at Camp Mirage in the United Arab Emirates to support peace missions and to provide emergency air transport.
