Russia and the Ukraine have furthered plans to jointly produce An-70 military transport planes, to be deployed in both nations’ air forces.

The An-70 is a short take-off and landing tactical military medium transport plane that is capable of airlifting 35t to 47t of cargo or flying 300 military personnel.

The agreement to restart the production of AN-70 transport plans was signed by defence ministries at the MAKS-2009 airshow currently taking place in Moscow.

Previously, Russia and the Ukraine had signed agreements on An-70 planes in 1993 and 1999 however, Russia pulled out of the contract in response to increasingly pro-western stance taken by the Ukraine.

According to a Ukrainian spokesperson the aircraft could be due for delivery as early as 2010.
