The Indian Air Force (IAF) is planning to increase the number of Sukhoi Su-30 fighter aircraft in its fleet to 230 by 2015.

India’s defence minister AK Anthony said at the announcement that the IAF feels that the Su-30 – one of the most advanced fighter aircraft in the world – is the aircraft best suited to Indian conditions.

Presently, the IAF possesses 98 Sukhoi aircraft, some of which are being upgraded to Su-30 MKI.

The IAF plans to use the Su-30 MKI as one of its main warplanes in conjunction with 126 medium multirole combat aircraft and indigenous light combat planes and has plans to phase out all other types of fighter aircraft in the future.
