The US Air Force (USAF) has awarded a contract to Lockheed Martin to produce Paveway II Plus laser-guided bomb (LGB) GBU-12 guidance kits.

The GBU-12 guidance kits consist of the MAU-209C/B computer control group and the MXU-650 air foil group.

While the MAU-209C/B control contains electronic guidance system, the MXU-650 provides lift and stability to the weapons.

The Paveway II Plus LGB kits, which can be carried on various aircraft platforms, do not require upgrades or modifications to aircraft.

LGB kits continues the same basic paveway II concept of operation for employment by converting conventional gravity weapons into precision-guided munitions and improve weapon accuracy and reduce risk to warfighters when compared to the legacy paveway II weapons.

Deliveries on the $100.5m contract are scheduled to begin in 2012.
