The Sri Lankan Air Force (SLAF) has opened a new airstrip in Kilinochchi, south-east of Jaffna, Sri Lanka, with the initial landing performed by an Y12 aircraft.

SLAF spokesman Group Captain Andy Wijesuriya said that the 1,000m-long airstrip was used by the former LTTE to train its fledging air wing.

“In the near future, the SLAF is planning to expand its Helitours operations to Kilinochchi from Ratmalana. We have plans to develop basic infrastructure around the airstrip,” he added.

The airstrip was recently renovated by SLAF airmen and is capable of handling light aircraft and helicopters.
