The number of UK Royal Air Force (RAF) bases located in Scotland will be reduced to only one with the closure of RAF Kinloss and RAF Leuchars by 2015.

The decision is part of the effect of the recent overhaul in the British Army and part of the strategic review of military bases announced in 2002.

RAF Lossiemouth will be retained as Scotland’s only air force base while the other air bases would be used to station the British Army.

The number of RAF personnel in Scotland is expected to be reduced by half while the British Army’s presence will be doubled.

The RAF Leuchar-based Typhoon squadrons will be moved to RAF Lossiemouth from 2013.
