Turkey may develop a new fighter aircraft with South Korea and Indonesia as part of its plans to refurbish the Turkish Air Force.

“There have been some preliminary talks about our possible participation in the KF-X programme,” the Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review reports quoting a senior Turkish procurement official.

The KF-X is a South Korean programme to develop an advanced multirole fighter for the Republic of Korea and Indonesian Air Forces under the project announced in March 2001.

Turkey is in negotiations with South Korea regarding the participation of Turkish Aerospace Industries in the consortium developing the KF-X in exchange for the transfer of technology from Turkey’s T-129 attack helicopter.

South Korea will provide 60% of the KF-X development costs, worth $4.2bn, while Indonesia has agreed to pay 20% and to buy about 50 KF-X aircraft.
