E-767 AWACS aircraft

The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has notified Congress of a potential foreign military sale (FMS) of an E-767 airborne warning and control system (AWACS) mission computing upgrade (MCU) and associated equipment to Japan.

Under the estimated $950m sale, Japan has requested for supply of an E-767 AWACS MCU package comprising four electronic support measure (ESM) systems, eight AN/UPX-40 next generation identify friend or foe (NGIFF) systems, eight AN/APX-119 IFF transponder, and four KIV-77 cryptographic computers.

The package also includes design and kit production, support and test equipment, provisioning, spare and repair parts, personnel training and training equipment, publications and technical documentation, installation and checkout, as well as other related elements of programme support.

As well as increasing Japanese AWACS fleet’s compatibility and interoperability with the US Air Force (USAF) AWACS fleet baseline, the enhanced command and control (C2) capability is also expected to be used by the country for its self-defence.

Consistent with US objectives and the 1960 Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security, the FMS contributes to the foreign policy and national security of the US by improving security of Japan, which is a key ally of the US in ensuring peace and stability of Asia-Pacific region.

Boeing Integrated Defense Systems (IDS) will serve as prime contractor for the FMS programme.

Featuring the Boeing E-3 Sentry’s AN/APY-2 surveillance radar and air control system installed on a Boeing 767-200 airliner, the E-767 AWACS aircraft was designed in response to the Japan Air Self-Defense Force’s (JASDF) tactical and air defence requirements and entered operational service inMay 2000.

Four E-767 aircraft are currently operated by the JASDF’s AEWG airborne warning and control squadron at Hamamatsu Air Base in central Japan.
