US Cyber Unit Becomes Operational

29 January 2010

The US Air Force Space Command's (AFSC) new cyber organisation 24th Air Force has been certified for initial operating capability.

This allows the unit to begin performing critical elements of its mission to extend, operate and defend the air force portion of the Defense Department's information network and support the joint warfighting environment.

The 24th Air Force is a component numbered air force subordinate to AFSC that was activated in August last year, defencesystems.com reports.

The unit includes the 67th Network Warfare and 688th Information Operations wings at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas, and the 689th Combat Communications Wing at Robins Air Force Base in Georgia.
