Kuwait Wants to Sign French Jets Deal

22 October 2009

Kuwait has expressed a desire to buy French Rafale jets for the nation's air force and is hoping to sign a deal with France soon.

Kuwaiti defence minister Sheikh Jaber Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah said that they hope to see an offer from France on the matter soon.

He was addressing journalists after signing a new defence accord with his French counterpart Herve Morin.

Earlier this year, French president Nicolas Sarkozy said that talks over a possible sale of up to 28 Rafale jets to Kuwait were 'quite advanced', and he expressed hopes of sealing a deal before the end of 2009.

Morin said that technical groups would meet as soon as possible to finalise the terms of the deal.

The Rafale, developed by Dassault Aviation is the latest multirole combat aircraft to be a flagship programme for France's arms industry.
