The Italian Air Force (ITAF) has successfully completed air-to-air refuelling (AAR) trials between its KC-767A tanker and the US Navy's fighter aircraft.
The test was conducted at Patuxent River Naval Air Station in Maryland to authorise KC-767A to refuel the US Navy F/A-18 Hornet and Super Hornet, AV-8B Harrier and EA-6B Prowlers.
The Italian Air Staff 3rd Department has appointed the Italian Flight Test Unit to support the testing and certification activities.
The Italian Flying Test Unit collected the information required to authorise the US aircraft to refuel from ITAF's KC-767A.
The refuelling trials were conducted for ten weeks, of which six were dedicated to flight testing.
The Boeing -built KC-767A is a military aerial refuelling and strategic transport aircraft that is derived from 767-200ER twin-aisle jetliner.
The first KC-767 tankers have officially entered service with the ITAF in 2011. The ITAF accepted delivery of these tanker aircraft to replace the B-707T/T fleet.
The KC-767 has an aerial refuelling boom with a remote aerial refuelling operator station, as well as wing pod and centerline hose and drogue systems, and a refuelling receptacle, Boeing said in a statement.
It features an advanced two-person, all-digital flight deck, military avionics, navigation and communications, and an optional defensive aids suite with radar warning receivers and electronic and opto-electronic countermeasures.
