BAE Systems has received a contract modification from the US Air Force (USAF) to continue delivering its operations and maintenance support services for the Solid State Phased Radar System (SSPARS).

Valued at $46m, this modification contract extends the work on a 12-year contract, which was initially awarded in 2006, for another year. The total contract value is estimated at around $550m.

BAE Systems intelligence and security sector president DeEtte Gray said: "Providing missile defence and space surveillance for the United States, Canada, and our allies is a very important mission.

"Our teams have deep knowledge of each site radar and system, and we look forward to helping ensure our customer continues to successfully achieve their vital mission."

As part of this new development, BAE Systems will continue supporting the USAF’s 21st Space Wing through 2018. The USAF unit is responsible for delivering missile warning and space surveillance awareness in defence of the country and its allies.

The company will be responsible for maintaining around-the-clock operations and maintenance support at each SSPARS site location.

The SSPARS sites offer the USAF capabilities including, sea-launched ballistic missile warning, ballistic missile early warning and space surveillance and ground-based midcourse defence programmes.

In addition, it provides maintenance for military satellite communications systems, communications-electronic systems, and precision measurement equipment calibration and maintenance.
