The $11m contract extension follows the previous $15m contract secured by the company in 2011, and brings the overall value of the WRTTM programme to Harris to more than $181m since 1991.

Under the new multi-year contract, the company will deliver WRTTMs to Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida, US.

Based on the previous generation semi-active guided Sparrow missiles, the AIM-120 AMRAAM missile is a new-generation beyond-visual-range (BVR) air-to-air missile that is capable of all-weather day and night performance.

The fire-and-forget missile with active guidance missile is designed to use highly accurate, long-range target detection capabilities offered by the advanced radar systems of modern warplanes.

The WRTTM replaces the warhead on the AMRAAM Missile during live test and training firings at Tyndall Air Force Base and provides positioning and telemetry data to the ground site following launch from F-15, F-16, and F-22 aircraft until impact.

Harris Government Communications Systems group president, Sheldon Fox, said: "The proven performance, reliability and availability of Harris telemetry modules are key contributors to the long-standing success of the Air Force’s Weapon System Evaluation programme."

The missile is available in three variants which include AIM-120A, AIM-120B and AIM-120C, all in service with the USAF, Navy and the US Marine Corps.

Employed during Operation Allied Force and the Kosovo bombing campaign by USAF, the missiles are also in service with Chile, Poland, Taiwan, Pakistan, Singapore, Switzerland, Finland, Morocco and the Republic of South Korea.
