C-17 Globemaster III aircraft

The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has notified the US Congress of a potential foreign military sale (FMS) of two F117-PW-100 engines to the UAE.

Under the estimated $35m sale, the UAE has requested the engines for integration into the air force’s C-17 Globemaster III military transport aircraft.

The proposed use of engines on the C-17 is expected to enhance the UAE’s readiness and capability for strategic airlift missions, as well as supporting humanitarian aid missions in the Middle East and Africa.

In addition to assisting troops in coalition operations, the C-17 airlifters will provide a heavy airlift capability and supplement day-to-day operations of the air force’s current Lockheed Martin-built C-130H Hercules fleet.

The potential sale will also contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the US by improving the security of UAE, which continues to serve as an important force for political stability and economic progress in the Middle Eastern region.

Pratt and Whitney will serve as prime contractor for the programme.

The UAE Air force operated a fleet of six Boeing-built C-17 Globemaster III aircraft. Powered by four Pratt & Whitney F117-PW-100 turbofan engines, the C-17 Globemaster III is a heavy-lift military transport aircraft.

The airlifter can also be modified to conduct tactical airlifts, medical evacuation and airdrop missions, as well as support humanitarian and disaster relief efforts.

Currently, the aircraft is in use with the US, Australia, Canada, Qatar, the UK and the 12-member Strategic Airlift Capability initiative of Nato and Partnership for Peace nations.
