ThalesRaytheonSystems (TRS) has completed operational testing of the Nato Air Command and Control System (ACCS) programme at the Nato System Test and Validation Facility in Glons, Belgium, moving a step closer towards its full operational capability.

Considered the programme’s most comprehensive and challenging test conducted to date, the eight-week testing fully evaluated the system against a thorough list of operational requirements, which included all live system interfaces, full system redundancy and security requirements.

Featuring a highly complex series of performance tests that validated the system in every peak load performance aspect, the testing enables Nato member states, including Belgium, France, Germany and Italy, to start trials at their respective national air command and control (C2) facilities.

Nato Air C2 programme director Enzo Montalti said the testing is a significant step towards full deployment of a unified military air command and control system that will eventually safeguard ten million square kilometers of airspace.

”The system will interconnect more than 20 military air control centers, providing a large spectrum of new and modern functionalities to all Nato air operators,” Montalti added.

ThalesRaytheonSystems chief executive officer Jack Harrington said: ”We are delighted to have worked so closely with NATO to reach this significant milestone and remain fully committed to the successful fielding of the ACCS system now underway at the 15 initial ACCS sites.”

Preparation for national site tests were conducted by the countries in parallel with the system’s validation testing to help ensure its availability to Nato as soon as possible.

Already installed at the Nato Air Command Center at Ramstein, Germany, the ACCS elements are currently being used during Operation Active Fence in support of the agency’s Patriot deployment in Turkey.

When operational, the ACCS is designed to help Nato member states in planning, automatic tasking, battlespace management, as well as task implementation for all types of air operations.
