Terma has installed its modular aircraft survivability equipment (MASE) on the Royal Netherlands Air Force’s (RNLAF) NH90 aircraft.

The integration of MASE on the RNLAF NH90 helicopters stems from a contract awarded to the company in 2014.

The deal was awarded based on the recommendations from a study programme conducted by the company for RNLAF in 2012.

The study identified measures to safeguard the NH90 aircraft against infrared-seeking missiles.

The MASE installation consists of the ALQ-213 electronic warfare management system (EWMS), a modular self-protection pod equipped with MILDS-F missile warning system, and the advanced countermeasures dispenser system updated with the latest generation Terma digital sequencer switch.

The ALQ-213 controller has been designed to control and integrate any combination of sensors and countermeasures systems on any type of aircraft and make these subsystems work as one integrated system.

“The pod is mounted on a dedicated carrier for optimum threat detection and countermeasures dispensing without compromising other NH90 capabilities.”

According to Terma, the pod is mounted on a dedicated carrier for optimum threat detection and countermeasures dispensing without compromising other NH90 capabilities.

The basic design of the installation facilitates the integration of directed infrared countermeasures (DIRCM) or new sensors such as radar and laser warning.

As part of the NH90 specific requirements, Terma has optimised the system to withstand the harsh operating environment helicopters are exposed to when operating over salt water.

The installation on the first NH90 has been completed and will undergo the final ground and flight test that is expected to begin in October.
