Raytheon is to begin production of its first multi-spectral targeting system (MTS) with next-generation accuracy for the US Air Force (USAF).

The USAF has awarded a $90m contract to Raytheon for the production of the company’s MTS range new variant AN/DAS-4.

The DAS-4 features four high-definition cameras covering five spectral bands; a three-colour diode pump laser designator / rangefinder; laser spot search and track capability; automated sensor and laser bore sight alignment; three mode target tracker; and built in provisions for future growth.

It also incorporates greater fire control and target location accuracy technology for precise coordinates, the company said.

Using the new MTS variant, USAF’s mission commanders will be able to use high-definition data from an airborne tactical sensor to identify and engage targets with much greater accuracy, thus improving overall mission effectiveness.

"These next generation capabilities give our warfighters an unfair advantage through more effective assessment of threats and engagement of targets."

Raytheon space and airborne systems intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance systems vice-president Fred Darlington said: "These next generation capabilities give our warfighters an unfair advantage through more effective assessment of threats and engagement of targets."

To date, Raytheon has delivered more than 3,000 MTS systems on a wide range of platforms, including remotely piloted aircraft, helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft.

In March this year, Raytheon secured a contract from the USAF to continue work on electronic warfare (EW) payload for cruise missiles.

The $4.8m deal requires the company to continue the counter-electronics high-power microwave advanced missile (CHAMP) aboard the conventional air-launched cruise missile (CALCM).
