Nato has deployed its Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) to one of its forward operating bases (FOB) at Konya, Turkey, as part of increasing assurance measures to the nation.

The move follows Turkey’s recent request to initiate tailored assurance by increasing AWACS presence in the region, as well as other integrated air, ground, and maritime activities, in the wake of growing cross-border activities with Russia.

The AWACS have commenced a series of additional support missions to build a comprehensive recognised air and surface picture (RASP) for Nato commanders on the ground.

Following the order from Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) to initiate tailored assurance measures, the Nato Airborne Early Warning and Control (NAEW&C) Force coordinated a full simulator rehearsal, completed mission planning.

"It is important for us to increase stability in the region and we are determined to do what is necessary to address or deter emerging threats."

Additionally, the force will be deployed to Konya every month as part of the new measures.

Nato Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) general Philip M. Breedlove said: "Nato must remain vigilant in order to maintain a high level of situational awareness.
