SBL Star Technology has awarded a contract to Airbus Defence and Space to supply advanced aircraft identification and air surveillance equipment to the Indonesian Air Force (TNI-AU).

Under the contract, the company will deliver two monopulse secondary surveillance radars 2000 I (MSSR 2000 I) for integration in the mobile air surveillance and tracking systems, which will be operated by TNI-AU.

The MSSR 2000 I systems are expected to improve the air force’s air traffic control and air defence capabilities over the country’s more than 15,000 islands.

Airbus Defence and Space Electronics Business Line head Thomas Muller said: "Air traffic control authorities all over the world are facing continually increasing air traffic density.

"Together with military air traffic, this situation requires a high-performance guidance system ensuring safety, comprehensive data exchange and efficient allocation of airspace.

Claimed to be the only secondary radar certified according to the latest air traffic control standards, both civil and military, the MSSR 2000 I provides an overview of the air situation based on interrogations and automatic replies from the individual aircraft.

The radar sends out interrogation signals according to the latest Mode S standard, which safely guides all aircraft in the area and eliminates the necessity of individual radar target acquisition, and collects the responses.

Currently used for automatic friend-or-foe identification (IFF) in the military field, MSSR 2000 I is also capable of the new Mode 5 military standard, which is to be introduced in all Nato countries.

The radar is deployed on German, French and UK naval vessels, and is also used by Austria, Portugal, Bulgaria and the Philippines for civil air traffic control purposes.

Deliveries under the contract, whose value remains undisclosed, are scheduled for completion in early 2015.
