GM 400 radar

Finland’s Air Force has taken delivery of the first Ground Master 400 (GM 400) air defence radar under contract from ThalesRaytheonSystems (TRS) at its headquarters in Tikkakoski.

The delivery follows a contract secured by the company in May 2009 for 12 GM 400 long-range air defence radars, to help address the air force’s medium-range air defense missile system (MRADMS) requirements.

ThalesRaytheonSystems SAS CEO Philippe Duhamel said the delivery is a result of cooperation between the Finnish Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the company personnel.

Finnish Air Force chief of staff brigadier general Kari Salmi said: "Our operators are satisfied with the progression of this programme which has reached this markable milestone and we are looking forward to see all these modern system benefits in operation.”

The radar completed a comprehensive field testing programme, including site acceptance procedures with the Finnish MoD, air force and TRS personnel, prior to its delivery.

Belonging to the TRS family of fully digital three dimensional air defence radars, the GM 406 is designed to safeguard vital military assets and expeditionary forces through detection of a wide range of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), missiles, mortars and rockets from very low to high altitudes.

Mounted in a tactical, truck-mounted configuration with an independent power supply, the radar provides enhanced detection performance, high operational availability and mobility, simplified maintenance and increased track accuracy for weapon assignment. The radar is also operational with Canada, France, Germany, Malaysia and Slovenia.
