CAE has completed a major visual system upgrade on two of the UK Royal Air Force’s (RAF) C-130J dynamic mission simulators located at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire, UK.
As part of the upgrade process, the company integrated the latest generation CAE Medallion 6000 image generator and liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) high-resolution projectors in the C-130J flight training device (FTD).

The image generator, which combines a proven feature set and image quality with capabilities of the latest commercial-off-the-shelf graphics processor, has been mounted on a newly installed 30° vertical by 170° horizontal field-of-view flat panel display system.
In addition to this, the company is delivering a suite of databases built to the Common Database (CDB) standard, an open database architecture that can be rapidly updated and enables correlated distributed mission training.
CAE Europe vice-president and business leader Ian Bell said the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has adopted the CAE Medallion-6000 image generator and CDB architecture on a wide range of flight simulators.
"This will further advance the UK MoD’s ability to leverage the commonality and interoperability delivered through our open, industry-standard solutions," Bell said.

By GlobalDataUK Royal Air Force XXIV Squadron Commanding Officer wing commander Dorian James said the latest generation visuals combined with the impressive extent of the new worldwide terrain and airfield databases will provide RAF with world-class training at a level of fidelity unparalleled in military synthetic training equipment.
James said: "Our C-130J Hercules aircrews are already talking of how the new visual systems make them feel far more immersed in the scenarios, which is allowing us to explore ways to expand the training we do with a view to increasing the use of simulation throughout our training curriculum."
Apart from C-130J FTD, the CAE Medallion-6000 image generator is also installed onboard the RAF Hawk 128 and Royal Navy Lynx Mk8 full-mission simulators.
