Research and development company Battelle has introduced a new counter-weapon to stop suspicious or hostile drones in flight, DroneDefender, offering critical security protection to customers.

National security is under threat due to the growing use and availability of commercially-available drones, known as unmanned aircraft systems (UAS).

Claimed to be the first portable, accurate, rapid-to-use counter-weapon, DroneDefender uses radio control frequency disruption technologies to stop drones in the air.

Battelle senior researcher Dan Stamm said: "This is just the kind of tool we need to safely counter a drone threat.

"The DroneDefender can help protect us from those who may wish to do us harm."

According to Battelle, the new solution is an inexpensive, easy-to-use, lightweight, point-and-shoot system with a range of 400m, and offers instant threat mitigation.

In addition, the system, which weighs less than 10 pounds, has a cold start time of less than 0.1 seconds and an operating time of five hours.

DroneDefender project technical director Alex Morrow said: "It can help us in numerous settings, from the White House lawn to bases and embassies overseas; from prisons and schools to historic sites.

"It easily and reliably neutralises the threat."

With its capacity to stop UAS without doing damage to the system, it can be used stateside as well as abroad, with versions hardened for forward deployment in challenging environmental conditions, the company stated.

Moreover, the system can be either fixed or portable since the company offers battery packs available to help protect any installation, it added.
