BAE Systems has commenced the final assembly of the Royal Air Force of Oman’s (RAFO) first Typhoon Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jet at its facility in Warton, Lancashire, UK.

The process, which will be completed in gradual phases, will involve the fitting of the fuselage, wings and undercarriage using special automated alignment facilities, leveraging on laser-trackers and computer-automated jacks.

Additionally, it will include the installation of other systems such as the fin and the foreplanes.

BAE Systems Military Air & Information managing director Martin Taylor said: "BAE Systems has a long-standing relationship with RAFO, through its operation of both the Jaguar fighter aircraft and an earlier variant of the BAE Systems Hawk, and we are proud to provide the support required to the Sultanate.

Built by a consortium of EADS, Alenia Aeronautica and BAE, the Typhoon is a twin-engine, canard-delta wing, multirole fighter designed for deployment during air operations including air policing and peace support, and high-intensity conflict missions.

The Typhoon is the largest new generation fighter programme in the world with 559 aircraft under production, and 321 currently operational with Austrian, Italian, German, Saudi, Spanish and the British air forces.

In 2012, the Sultanate of Oman placed an order worth multi-billion pound for the production and delivery of an undisclosed number of Typhoon and Hawk Advanced Jet Trainer (AJT) aircraft, along with in-service support to the RAFO’s operational tasks.
