One more UN school-turned-shelter in Gaza has been destroyed in strikes between Israel and Palestine killing at least 15 inmates.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) working for Palestinian refugees said that Jabalia Elementary Girls School, which is housing around 3,300 people, was hit by at least three strikes on Tuesday night.

UNRWA said in a statement: "Last night, children were killed as they slept next to their parents on the floor of a classroom in a UN designated shelter in Gaza.

"The precise location of the Jabalia Elementary Girls School and the fact that it was housing thousands of internally displaced people was communicated to the Israeli army 17 times, to ensure its protection; the last being at ten-to-nine last night, just hours before the fatal shelling."

Israel has said that it is investigating into the attack on the school.

The country has intensified strikes on Gaza since Tuesday evening. The intervening night of Monday and Tuesday has witnessed the heaviest shelling by Israel with at least 100 said to have been killed in 24 hours.

More than 1,200 Palestinians and 50 Israeli military men have been killed since the conflict began on 8 July.

UNRWA spokesperson Christopher Gunness said: "Tens of thousands may soon be stranded in the streets of Gaza, without food, water and shelter if attacks on these areas continue. We have moved beyond the realm of humanitarian action alone. We are in the realm of accountability."

In a statement released on Tuesday, the UN said: "UN agencies in Gaza do not have the resources on the ground to cope with, or provide assistance to, an enormous extra influx of desperate people."
