The Indian Air Force (IAF) has sought permission from the country’s government to develop a new air base in Ladakh, near the Chinese border.

If the government gives approval for the new Nyoma Air Base at 13,300ft, located 23km from the line of actual control (LAC), it will be the IAF’s highest operational air base.

The IAF will use the airfield to deploy all types of aircraft, including frontline fighter aircraft to increase its strength on the Chinese border.

The development of the Nyoma advanced landing ground (ALG) into a full-fledged airbase will take nearly four years to complete, according to indianexpress.com.

The air force’s Su-30MKI fighters have been specially modified to operate at altitude and will be able to function from the Nyoma base.

In September 2009, the Nyoma ALG was made operational with the landing of an AN-32 medium-lift transport aircraft.
