The Indian Air Force (IAF) will begin trials of six basic trainer aircraft for training new pilots at Jamnagar, Gujarat, later this month.

The IAF will test the German GROB 120 TP, Embraer EMB 312 Super Tucano of Brazil, the Korean Aerospace Industries KT-1, Finmeccanica M-311 of Italy and the Pilatus PC-7 of Switzerland.

During the trials, the IAF team will observe flight characteristics, handling qualities, fuel consumption, duration of sorties, ease of handling, and operations and available instrumentation.

The government has approved the procurement of 75 aircraft, while 106 such aircraft will be built by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), according to the Hindu.

The selected manufacturer will have to deliver the first 12 aircraft, which will include simulators and computer-aided learning systems, within 24 months of the contract.
